Territory Generation’s Channel Island Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been recognised as the Northern winner of Project of the Year at the 2026 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards.
Delivered in partnership with Hitachi Energy, the 32.6 MW grid-forming battery is one of the most significant energy infrastructure projects delivered in the Northern Territory in recent years. Located at Channel Island Power Station, the BESS helps maintain the stability and reliability of the Darwin-Katherine power system while supporting greater integration of renewable energy.
The project was recognised for its engineering excellence, innovation and contribution to a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Territorians. Unlike traditional battery projects focused on energy storage, the Channel Island BESS provides critical system services including system strength, inertia and frequency control, functions historically delivered by gas turbines.
By providing these services, the BESS enables more efficient operation of the power system, reduces reliance on gas-fired generation for system support and helps create a more secure, sustainable and affordable energy future for the Territory.
Since commissioning in 2025, the BESS has strengthened network stability and operational flexibility, delivering benefits for more than 180,000 Territorians who rely on the Darwin-Katherine power system.
The award recognises the dedication and expertise of the many people involved in the project’s design, construction, commissioning and ongoing operation, as well as the strong collaboration between Territory Generation and Hitachi Energy.
