Territory Generation is pleased to finalise a commercial 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply electricity to the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap.

The PPA will see Territory Generation supply electricity from the Alice Springs grid to the Commonwealth Government Department of Defence for the Pine Gap facility.

This will not only provide a more efficient supply of electricity to Pine Gap, but the increased demand will support a stable baseload for Alice Springs, increasing efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply to the town.

Critical new transmission infrastructure including a new power line will be constructed, creating up to 30 new local jobs over 12 months.

This significant infrastructure investment will be funded and owned by the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap.

Territory Generation Chief Executive Officer Tim Duignan explained that the agreement is aligned with Territory Generation’s continued focus on optimising existing assets and infrastructure to provide a stable and reliable energy mix to Territorians.

“This agreement has been in negotiation for some years and we are pleased to put in place an arrangement that will ultimately benefit Territorians through jobs, stability of baseload power to Alice Springs and revenue generation,” he said.

“The increased demand will provide a stable baseload for the Alice Springs town, increasing efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply by utilising Territory Generation’s existing gas generators, while allowing more room in the load profile for the addition of increased renewable energy on the Alice Springs network.”

The commercial sale of electricity will start after completion of construction of the transmission line and associated infrastructure. The Minister for Renewables and Essential Services Dale Wakefield has today approved the gazette to authorise the supply by Territory Generation.

Works on the new power line are scheduled to commence in early 2019.
