Darwin-Katherine battery energy storage system procurement begins

3 November 2020

Territory Generation has reached a key milestone for the new 35MW $30 million Darwin-Katherine Battery Energy Storage System (D-K BESS) project, with the procurement process kicking off today.

Local businesses are invited to tender for the two-part procurement, comprising of a round one ‘Prequalification’ which seeks to understand industry capability and encouraging innovation, followed by a round two ‘Request for proposals’ where successful round one tenderers will be invited to participate in a detailed technical stage.

Territory Generation CEO, Gerhard Laubscher, emphasised the importance of the procurement phase. “We are taking a collaborative approach to project planning with a number of stakeholders across Government and industry to ensure we are maximising value to the Territory,” Mr Laubscher said.

The BESS, which will deliver cost savings of around $6 million per year, will deliver greater system reliability and security in the Darwin-Katherine power network. It will be capable of supplying power system services currently provided by existing gas-fired generation, and is expected to be operational in the second half of 2022.
