Developing local engineering pathways through sySTEMic Collaboration

In 2022, Territory Generation was proud to continue its sponsorship of Engineers Australia’s sySTEMic Collaboration initiative, featuring long-term partnerships between industry and education providers. The award-winning sySTEMic Collaboration is designed to increase the number of young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) industries, help prepare these students for the world beyond school, and inspire them to pursue a post-school STEM qualification.

This year, 18 students from Casuarina Senior College participated in the program. For their major project completed across a semester, students teamed up in small groups with industry mentors. Territory Generation’s three principal engineers, Kevin Edwin (Mechanical), Boyd Hillebrand (Electrical), and Anjoan Bala (System Control), participated as industry mentors alongside representatives from Inpex, GHD, Power Water and Crowley Australia. The students’ project work was interspersed with activities designed to engage them in STEM, including an immersive site visit, a problem-solving day mini-competition, and a laser tag and conversation session with young engineers.

For their final task, students presented their major project to a panel of judges, including Territory Generation’s General Manager Assets & Engineering, Minh Tran, Charles Briston from Inpex, and Peter Ramsey from Casuarina Senior College. Parents, school representatives, and Minister Eva Lawler also attended. Projects presented included a folding bamboo chair, a workbench, tool holders and metal jewellery.

Along with the final product and presentation, students were judged on their collaboration, lessons learned, and use of the Engineering Design Process. The judges commended all students, with two winners and two honourable mentions awarded.

We thank Engineers Australia, and all those involved, for this ongoing development of local engineering pathways. A highly capable and innovative engineering workforce is critical to our delivery of service as the Territory’s trusted and respected energy services provider.
