Our history

The first Northern Territory power stations were built in 1934 in Darwin and 1937 in Alice Springs, well before the Northern Territory Electricity Commission (NTEC) was formed in 1978. In 1987, the NTEC joined with the NT Water Authority to establish the Power and Water Authority. In 2002, the Power and Water Corporation (PWC) was created as the Northern Territory’s first government owned corporation. In December 2013, the Northern Territory Government announced NT electricity market structure reforms. Territory Generation and Jacana Energy were subsequently separated from PWC, and, on 1 July 2014, also became standalone government owned corporations.

Territory Generation’s maintains sites of heritage interest that have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Territory over the years. Our power stations have seen significant growth and change and now house the latest technologies as well as heritage equipment.
